In U.S.News & World Report’s 2009-2010 issue showcasing “America’s Best Hospitals,” Rush ranked in 9 of 16 categories. Only 3% of hospitals in the country scored high enough this year to rank even in a single specialty. Rush was ranked higher than any other Illinois hospital in Orthopedics at #12 in the nation. Other ranked programs are: Neurology and Neurosurgery, #12; Geriatric Care, #24; Gastroenterology (Digestive Disorders), #26; Kidney Disorders, #29; Heart and Heart Surgery, #30; Urology, #31; Gynecology, #50 and Ear, Nose & Throat, #50.

Blue StarSM Performer
Rush Health was recognized as a 2009 Blue StarSM Performer for nine of nine possible clinical areas: Asthma, Diabetes, Mental Health Follow-Up, Childhood Immunization, Breast Cancer Screening, Influenza Vaccination, Controlling High Blood Pressure, Colorectal Cancer Screening and Management of Cardiovascular Conditions. also earned a Blue Ribbon distinction based on a high satisfaction score bymembers. The annual BlueStar Report recognizes contracting physician groups that have documented high levels of performance in providing patient care, in accordance with nationally based clinical practice and preventive care guidelines.

In 2006, Rush received renewal of its Magnet status, the highest recognition given for nursing
excellence. The designation recognizes Rush nursing staff for overall excellence and for
providing the very best care to patients. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
Magnet Recognition Program first awarded Rush the four-year Magnet designation in 2002.
Fewer than 50 hospitals in the United States have received Magnet designation twice.

Rush University Medical Center received the 2009 Quality Leadership Award as measured by a special quality and accountability benchmarking study conducted by the University HealthSystems Consortium (UHC). Rush was one of five academic medical centers in the country to receive this award. The other top-performing hospitals identified by UHC were Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, University Medical Center in Tucson and the University of Kansas Hospital Authority in Kansas City. Results of the study were shared at UHC’s 9th annual Quality and Safety Forum in Atlanta, Georgia on October 1, 2009.

For the 8th time, Rush University Medical Center has been named one of the country’s “Most Wired” hospitals by Hospitals and Health Networks magazine. Each year, the magazine identifies U.S. medical centers which are “pairing information technology with strategic plans in their efforts to improve quality, streamline processes and drive financial returns.” RUMC is recognized as a leader in developing physician order entry and is currently implementing hospital-wide electronic records.

Earning the "Gold Seal of Approval," the Stroke Program at Rush has been certified by the Joint Commission as a primary stroke center. This certification recognizes hospitals that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. Rush specialists in stroke, other cerebrovascular conditions and neurological critical care provide care for people with cerebrovascular disorders in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Rush University Medical Center has been appointed as a 2009 Top Urban Hospital by Leapfrog Group, a hospital rating organization. Metrics used in this study include measuring implementation of computerized physician order entry systems, meeting high performance standards in high-risk procedures, fully meeting standards for staffing the intensive care unit and scoring in the top 10% of hospitals in efficiency, of which Rush is one of three listed as a Top Hospital in Illinois.

Rush Oak Park Hospital and Rush University Medical Center were both recognized by the American Diabetes Association as education services that meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education. Rush University Medical Center was selected as one of the Top 100 Hospitals in the United States by Thomas Reuters. This is the first time Rush has made the list and Rush was one of only 15 major teaching hospitals in the nation to receive the honor. Thomas Reuters is a leading source of business information that specializes in areas such as healthcare. The Top Hospitals list is based on such factors as mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates.
